Enrichment: Business Major

Business features a broad curriculum of learning and experience to help shape the business leaders of tomorrow. Past graduates have gone on to join family businesses, work in major corporations and create successful start-ups of their own.

Based on the interests of our motivated, businessminded students, this major teaches students business principles and the practical aspects of business in daily life. Students develop the skills and experience to dive right into higher-level courses or pursue their entrepreneurial dreams. This hands-on course takes you out of the classroom and covers everything from writing a mission statement to maintaining a corporate investment portfolio. By the end of the session, you'll use everything you've learned to prepare a business plan or marketing presentation for a company or product of your choice.

Areas of study include: Entrepreneurship, Marketing, Accounting, Investing, Networking Skills, Leadership and Ethics. Sessions are complemented by field trips to major area businesses and talks by top business leaders in Philadelphia.

A Hands-On Approach to Business Learning

Six areas of study are explored through a combination of speakers, group activities, games, competitions, field trips and student projects. Classroom sessions are complemented by field trips to major area businesses and talks by top business leaders in Philadelphia.

Entrepreneurship — An exciting introduction to business creation, ownership and management. Working in small groups, students will create a vision for their business, and then develop and present a plan to make it succeed.

Marketing — Student teams will generate ideas in the initial brainstorming stage, then take them through preliminary sketches and storyboards to create a compelling multimedia presentation or their marketing campaign.

Accounting — Frequently taught by our own in-house chartered accountant extraordinaire, Julian Krinsky, this section breathes life into balance sheets and income statements.

Investing — Students will learn to make informed decisions by understanding market basics, approaches to profitable investing, and various investment options including hedge funds and socially responsible funds.

Networking Skills — A big part of business is “who you know.” At this program, you make actual real-world contacts. Past students have communicated with CEOs of major corporations and presidents of major universities. We give you the confidence to make and maintain these relationships as you begin building your network.

Leadership and Ethics — We embrace a culture of leadership in the community as well as in the business world. Classes will engage in leadership simulations after analyzing the theories and tactics of internationally established business leaders.
